SIESTA KEY, Fla. – Although not competing as a team, the FGCU sand volleyball team saw five pairs compete at the 2014 Fiesta on Siesta Sand Volleyball tournament this weekend. The Eagles took part in the nation’s largest collegiate sand volleyball tournament on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday April 13.
The weekend was highlighted by a win from Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River High School) and Shelby Joslin (Alva, Fla./Evangelical High School). The duo earned a 25-20 win over UAB on Saturday but fell to Stetson in the second round.
In Saturday’s play, the no. 1 pair of Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers High School) and Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani High School) fell to Jacksonville’s no. 1 pair, 21-7, 21-10. The no. 2 pair of Elenora Kazarian (Tibilisi, Georgia/College of Central Florida) and Caroline Jordan (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone High School) fell to Grand Canyon, 21-13, 21-15.
The freshmen duo of Madi Wilcox (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein High School) and Marlene Moeller (Ludinghausen, Germany/Pascal Gymnasium) battled cross-state foe Florida State but lost, 25-15. The Eagles’ final pair of Karina Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) and Vanessa Benke (Toledo, Brazil/College of Central Florida) fought in a close match to Tulane but ultimately fell, 25-23.
The Eagles will return to Fort Myers to host the 2014 Atlantic Sun Tournament Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. The team will welcome the other four A-Sun teams and will compete as the no. 5 seed.
