Masters and Mambuca Earn Academic All-Conference Accolades

MACON, Ga. – On the eve of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Tournament, the FGCU sand volleyball team earned two positions on the Academic All-Conference team.  Senior Karina Mambuca and junior Whitney Masters each received the accolade, which is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.

“Karina and Whitney are great leaders on and off the court for our team,” said head coach Matt Botsford.  “This award is a true testament to their dedication as student-athletes.”

Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) holds a grade point average of 3.76 as a Business Management major.  The senior posted four wins in her final five matches of the regular season including victories over conference leader North Florida and SEC power LSU.

As a nursing major, Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani High School) maintains a grade point average of 3.78.  The junior won eight matches at the no. 1 position this season including strong performances against FAU, Warner, Stetson, Tulane and the nation’s no. 7 team FIU.  Masters’ earned a position on the All-Academic team for the second-consecutive year.

Mambuca, Masters and the FGCU sand volleyball team will compete in and host the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Sand Volleyball Tournament Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19 at the Estero Community Park.  As the no. 5 seed, the Eagles will take on no. 4 Mercer on Friday morning.
