No. 22 Eagles Take One in Tri Meet
Naples, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s swimming team picked up a win against Indian River Community College, but fell to No. 11 Penn State on Sunday in their first tri meet of the season.
The Eagles defeated Indian River Community College 135-70 and fell to No. 11 Penn State 151-54. Penn State also defeated IRCC 153-48.
“I’m very pleased with today’s outcome,” said Head Coach Neal Studd. “These were two very good programs, Penn State is ranked 11th in the country, and Indian River has been a dominate force for many years. We had some good finishes and everyone gave a solid effort. The 1-2 finish in the 200-yard backstroke was a big step for the program. “Viktoria Hyddmark and Rachel Rein stepped it up in the 200-yard backstroke, and Courtney Gallo had a lot of consistency.”
Hyddmark’s meet was highlighted by a first place finish in the 200-yard Backstroke event. Gallo, as always, was one of the most consistent swimmers for the Eagles, swimming her way to two second place finishes. Rein added a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke and Lallier turned in a third place finish in the 200-yard Butterfly.
Penn State swept their way through the first two events of the morning, the 400-yard medley relay.
Junior Courtney Gallo (Lake Worth, Fla.) swam her way to a second place finish in the 1000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 10:20.21, while freshman Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla.) placed fourth with a time of 10:48.07.
Courtney Gallo took third in the 200-Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:57.49. Freshman Rae Conroy (Gainesville, Fla.) swam her way to a sixth place finish with a time of 2:00.48, while Taylor Cooke was seventh with a time of 2:01.21.
In the 50-Yard Freestyle, freshman Rachael Rein (Oviedo, Fla.) touched in fourth with a time of 25.50. Freshman Rae-Lynn Sheffield (Brooksville, Fla.) placed seventh with a time of 25.78, followed by freshman Kristin Pomerleau (Calgary, Alberta) 25.96, and freshman Lisa Errington (Naples, Fla.) 26.70.
In the 200-Yard IM, the Eagles were led by freshman Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Saweden). Hyddmark out-touched IRCC swimmer Katie McRoberts to finish fourth with a time of 2:14.40.
The Eagles took third and fifth in the 200 Yard-Butterfly. Freshman Corinna Lallier (Woodbury, Minn.) placed third with a time of 2:09.12, and freshman Dianna Granville (Ottawa, Ontario) finished fifth with a time of 2:16.63.
Hyddmark and Rein teamed up to go 1-2 in the women’s 200-yard backstroke. Viktoria Hyddmark took the win with a time of 2:05.20. Rachel Rein out-touched Penn State’s Kaitlin O'Brien to swim her way to a second place finish. Her time of 2:06.55 was just .03 seconds ahead Penn State’s Kaitlin O’Brien.
The Eagles will be in action again next weekend on January 12 as they travel to Tallahassee to face FSU, FIU, and FAMU. Meet time is set for 10:00 a.m. at the Bobby E. Leach Recreation Center. Both the swimmers and divers will be competing next weekend.
