Swimming and Diving Goes 1-1 at Tri-Meet
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University swimming and diving team defeated Florida International, 165-74, but fell to Miami, 169-70, in a tri-meet Saturday morning at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

The Eagles were led by junior Courtney Gallo (Lake Worth, Fla.) and freshmen Rachel Rein (Oviedo, Fla.), and Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden) who all came away with second place finishes. The Hurricanes came up victorious in all but two events on the afternoon.
The Eagles, who moved to 8-6 on the season with one win Saturday, also placed second in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:49.90 in addition to a mark of 3:38.70 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Gallo took second in the long distance freestyle event, touching in second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:28.54.
Rein swam to a second place finish in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall in 2:09.21. Fellow freshman Viktoria Hyddmark also came away with a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
On the diving boards, freshman Karmen McNamara (Tampa, Fla.) came in third in the 1-meter event with a score of 214.50, and classmate Sarah McCollough (Lakeland,Fla.) also came in third in the 3-meter event with a score of 219.80
“I’m very impressed on how we swam today,” said head coach Neal Studd.” This young group came out and competed.”
The Eagles will hit the road next week with a trip to Florida Atlantic University Saturday, Feb. 2 to take on the Owls for a second time this season after FAU came away with a 190-110 win in the first meeting between the two schools in Fort Myers, Oct. 27. The meet at the FAU Pool is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
Following next weeks meet against FAU, the Eagles will begin preparation for the 2008 Inaugural Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships in Charlotte, NC, Feb 21-23.
