|
Fort Myers, Fla.- The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s swimming and diving team will participate in the first-ever conference championship for the CCSA, which will be held in Huntersville, N.C. at the Huntersville Aquatic Center over a three-day period Feb.21-23. The Eagle’s team competed well throughout their inaugural season and is among one of the A-Sun favorites
The Eagles have stepped it up, winning six meets since the start of the new year. The Eagles feature several prominent swimmers that possess the ability to win events and drive the Eagles to top finishes among an extremely tough CCSA.
Freshman Rachael Rein (Oviedo, Fla.) earned CCSA Swimmer of the Week twice in the month of January. Her most recent CCSA Swimmer of the Week Honor was on Jan.22; Rein led her team to two victories over Conference opponents North Florida and Campbell, earning five first-place finishes. She got started with a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle against North Florida, clocking in at 25.57. In her second event of the meet, the 100-yard backstroke, she tallied another first-place finish touching the wall at 1:00.68, nearly two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Against Campbell, Rein started off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.48, which also marked a new personal best. She then went on to win the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 53.27. She finished out the meet with a win in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:08.47, which was nearly four seconds ahead of all other swimmers. Rein sits atop the CCSA in six events.
Freshman Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden) also earned CCSA Swimmer of the Week Honors after her performance for meets competed Oct. 22-28. Hyddmark earned first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke against Georgia Institute of Technology, Florida Atlantic and Tampa in FGCU’s first home quad meet. She also posted a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly against Tampa, and helped the 200-yard medley relay team swim to a first place finish against Florida Atlantic and Tampa. Hyddmark started the meet in the 200-yard medley relay, where she swam first for her team in the 50-yard backstroke and recorded a time of 27.95, which was the fastest time of every first-leg swimmer. In her second event, Hyddmark reached the wall in 58.70 in the 100-yard backstroke, which was good for first-place. In the 200-yard backstroke, she beat out all 13 racers with a time of 2:04.54 for her second individual win of the meet. Hyddmark’s times in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke rank No. 1 in the League. Hyddmark swam the 100-yard butterfly for her last event, and finished in a time of 1:00.46, beating out all Tampa swimmers. Hyddmark’s wins helped her team defeat Tampa with a score of 231-62.
Junior Courtney Gallo (Lake Worth, Fla./Ohio) holds three top times in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle, and 500-yard freestyle. |
“It has been a long process, and finally we get a chance to show off all the hard work that everyone has put into this program,” said head coach Neal Studd.”This is a great opportunity especially for a first year team. If we are able to go mistake free, we have a very good chance to finish among the top.”
