FGCU Swimming and Diving Named CSCAA Scholar All-America Team
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The College Swimming Coaches Association of America announced their swimming and diving Division I Scholar All-American teams on Wednesday, July 1. The list featured 81 women's teams from across the country who bettered the required 3.000 GPA, and included the FGCU swimming and diving team. Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Canada) earned 2009 Honorable Mention Scholar All-American honors after finishing the spring semester with a 3.82 GPA.
“I could not be happier with what my team achieved this year both in and out of the classroom,” Head Coach Neal Studd said. “We won a conference championship, won the Eagle Spirit Award for team spirit on campus, and now we have proven ourselves with a top-10 national ranking in the classroom. My team works hard at everything they do they are a pleasure to be associated with. I am so very proud of their success and in many ways this was a perfect season!”
The Lady Eagles finished tied-eighth out of 109 teams, closing the spring semester with a 3.48 team grade point average. Out of the five Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) women's teams who finished in the top-109, Florida Gulf Coast had the second-highest team grade point average, behind Gardner-Webb (3.55 team grade point average).
These numbers come on the heels of FGCU’s 16 women named to CCSA All-Academic team in March.
The Lady Eagles earned the CSCAA team honor thanks to four student-athletes earning perfect 4.0 GPA’s during the spring semester. Diana Granville (Ottawa, Ontario), Vicktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden), Teri Lytle (Melbourne, Fla.), and Catrina Silveira (Doral, Fla.) all received 4.0 GPA’s during the Spring 2009 semester.
"It is great to earn the first Scholar All-America honors in FGCU Swimming and Diving history," Studd said. "We want to do everything right behind the scenes so that when the kids hang up their goggles or stop diving, they'll have something to fall back on."
