FGCU Swimming and Diving Signs Olympian, Danielle Beaubrun
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Danielle Beaubrun has signed a National Letter of Intent with Florida Gulf Coast University’s Swimming and Diving Team. Beaubrun competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics last August while representing her home island nation of St. Lucia. She earned 42nd place accolades in the 100m breaststroke.
Coach Studd is excited Danielle has agreed to make FGCU her home for the next four years bringing talent and experience to the program. “I expect FGCU Swimming to be represented in the 2012 Olympics in London; Dani can definitely earn another Olympic team spot along with some rapidly improving, current swimmers and future recruits I hope to sign. My goal is to have three or four FGCU swimmers in the next Olympic Games!”
Beaubrun is headed to Rome for the World Championships beginning July 26. “Dani just came off the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships in Barquisimeto, Venezuela where she won two gold and one silver medal as well as setting two National records,” said Studd. “This was exceptional considering she is focused on peaking in Rome at the World Champs, the biggest event after the Olympics.”
Studd went on to talk about the rest of his incoming class with equal excitement, “This is a very special class. When added to the talent we already have, this year can really put us on the map. With the 18 newcomers joining us this fall, we will add to our already outstanding student-athlete pool. The team will be much stronger this season in every area and competition for spots will be tough, but I know this will bring out the best in the girls and that’s why so many are choosing our team. Each young lady is aware she will have to work hard but also knows she will improve here. I hold them to very high standards in the pool and the classroom; I think that shows with our national rankings in both areas.”
The FGCU Swimming & Diving Team finished the 2008-09 campaign with a first place Conference finish winning by 234 points. They were also recognized as an Academic All-American Team (3.48 GPA) ranking 8th amongst all Division I swimming & diving teams in the country.
The team begins their 2009-10 season on October 3, 2009 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in a meet with the University of Alabama. Their first home meet will be October 17, 2009 against in-state rivals Florida State University and University of Miami.
