Eagles Crush Florida International
MIAMI, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team continued their strong start to the 2009-10 season, crushing Florida International 205.5-92.5 at the Bay Vista Aquatics Complex on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus. Of the 16 events that were held, the Eagles placed first in 13.
FGCU’s “D” team captured first place in the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:52.13, one second ahead of FGCU’s “A” team. The Eagles also swam well in the only other relay event of the day, the 400 free relay, in which FGCU’s “A” team took first in 3:37.45, followed by FGCU’s “B” team.
The Eagles dominated the freestyle events, winning four out of the five races, including sweeps of the top three positions in the 50 free and 200 free. Margie Chamberlin (Land ‘O Lakes, Fla.) won the 50 free in 25.28, followed closed by Dani Beabrun (Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia) and Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla.). FGCU’s Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) won the 200 free, edging out Chamberlin and Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla.).
Plante also excelled in the breaststroke events, winning the 100 breast in 1:08.37 and the 200 breast in 2:24.63. FGCU also captured victories in both backstroke events, with Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, UK) winning the 100 back in 59.13 and Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) winning the 200 back in 2:12.48. Alex Cianci (Plantation, Fla.) picked up a first-place finish in the 200 fly, finishing with a time of 2:10.61, and Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico) won the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, in 2:16.50.
In the diving competitions, Stephanie Young won the 1-meter diving with a score of 216.45, while Karmin McNamara earned a second-place finish in the 3-meter diving with a 201.90. Young was just a couple points behind McNamara with a 199.88.
The Eagles will be back at their home pool next week as they host a tri-meet on Friday, October 30th. Florida Atlantic and the University of Tampa will be traveling to Fort Myers to take on FGCU, with the meet set for a 6 p.m. start.
