Eagles Ranked Fifth in Mid-Major Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's swimming and diving team is ranked fifth in the first CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Division I poll of the 2009-10 season. The poll ranks the schools from non-BCS conferences four times each year and emphasizes success in dual meet competition. The Eagles are ranked higher than any other CCSA school, with the closest CCSA opponent being Davidson (20th).
The CollegeSwimming.com rankings are based on each team's best dual meet lineup as judged and submitted by participating teams. Rankings are announced four times throughout the season – November (Pre-Invite), December (Post-Invite), February (Pre-Conference), and March (Post-Conference).
Since 2002, CollegeSwimming.com has produced an objective ranking system for Mid-Major, Division I swimming programs. The Mid-Major poll is available to those institutions that a) are not members of a BCS conference, Mountain West Conference, or Western Athletic Conference; or b) provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules. This poll is inclusive of all results to date prior to mid season invitationals. The next poll will be released on December 23rd.
Boston University is ranked first, with Towson, Miami (Ohio), and Western Kentucky rounding out the top four. This is the highest position FGCU has held in a November poll. The Eagles finished the 2008-09 campaign ranked seventh, after being ranked as high as fourth earlier in the year.
FGCU started the season 3-3, losing to Georgia Tech, Alabama, and Florida State, and beating Georgia Southern, FAU and Miami, but has since defeated their last four opponents. The Eagles have also defeated the only two CCSA opponents they have faced (Georgia Southern and UNF).
The next competition for the Eagles (7-3) is the Miami Invitational, December 3-5 at the Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio. Following the Invitational, FGCU faces three more meets before traveling to Knoxville, Tennessee for the CCSA Championships February 18-20.
