Beaubrun Breaks Five National Records For St. Lucia
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU women’s swimming and diving sophomore-to-be Danielle Beaubrun competed in the Central American and Caribbean Games during July 18-23 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
The 2008 Olympian was picked to carry the flag in the opening ceremonies for her home country of St. Lucia. Beaubrun competed in the 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke, breaking five national records along the way. Beaubrun was able to break five national records in just three events thanks to her times in the prelims, splits and finals.
After finishing in the top five in each of her preliminary races, the Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, native took fourth place in the 100-meter breast, clocking in at 1:12.30. She also finished sixth in the 50-meter with a time of 33.15 seconds and ninth in the 200 at 2:43.38.
“Dani was able to break five national records at CACG and this is no small feat considering all the previous records were set in the highly controversial technical suits,” said FGCU head coach Neal Studd, who joined Danielle in Puerto Rico during the event. “She swam more than a half a second faster than her suit-aided time from the Beijing Olympic Games. This was a huge step forward for a fast improving swimmer as we prepare for the 2012 Olympic Games. Dani has some areas to still improve on and that's the most exciting part as she gets faster and faster. I am really looking forward to seeing what she can do in college swimming this season.”
The biology major won two bronze medals at the 2010 CCSA Championship as a member of the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams.
Beaubrun will also compete on an international stage in the same events in the Commonwealth Games in Dehli, India on October 4-9, at the Dr. S.P.M. Aquatics Complex in the Talkatora Gardens.
More than 25 countries competed in the Central American and Caribbean Games that are held every four years, typically in the middle year between Summer Olympics.
