Swimming and Diving Releases 2010-11 Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off its second straight Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Conference Championship in 2010, the FGCU swimming and diving team released its 2010-11 schedule on Wednesday. The schedule features five home meets, a trip to the All-Florida Invite hosted by the National Champion Gators and a three-day stay at the Georgia Tech Invite.
“Our schedule this year is very competitive and as we continue to improve we have added tougher and tougher opponents,” said head coach Neal Studd, the reigning CCSA Co-Coach of the Year. “This year we start the season with the National Champions, the Florida Gators, so it does not get any tougher than that. We have an exciting fall invitational at Georgia Tech where we will be up against some of the very best schools from the SEC, ACC and Big Ten conferences racing in the 1996 Olympic pool.”
The Eagles open their schedule at the home of the 2010 National Champion Florida Gators at the All-Florida Invite, beginning on October 1 in Gainesville, Fla. Following the invite, FGCU heads to Florida Atlantic for its first dual meet of the season on October 9.
FGCU then hits the road to swim a pair of tri-meets, beginning with a trip to Florida A&M on Friday, Oct. 22 that will also feature Campbell. Just a day later, the Eagles head to Florida State to take on the Seminoles and Miami on October 23. FGCU earned a split against the Seminoles and Hurricane last season, defeating Miami, 195-99. At the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, the Seminoles were receiving votes in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I Team Poll.
“We are looking forward to the trip to Florida State to duel them and Miami,” said Studd. “I think competing against the best in the country shows my athletes and recruits where I expect this program to be heading and I can't wait to get started.”
The Blue and Green host their first home meet of the season and welcome in-state foe FIU to the Lee County/FGCU Aquatics Center on Friday, October 29 at 6 p.m. The Eagles defeated FIU in both meets last season.
After a short break, FGCU is back in the pool at the Georgia Tech Invite in Atlanta, Ga., in a meet that will include some the nation’s top competition. Joining the host Yellow Jackets will be Michigan State, Florida and Clemson. Clemson also received votes in the CSCAA Team Poll. The invite begins on Thursday, November 18 and concludes on November 20.
FGCU hosts its last home meet of 2010 against North Texas on December 18 before breaking for the holidays. North Texas finished the season a spot behind the Blue and Green at No. 16 in the CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Women’s Team Poll.
The Eagles gear up for 2011 with a quad-meet against CCSA foes, Georgia Southern, Liberty and Radford on January 8 at 11 a.m. at the FGCU Aquatics Center.
UNF then visits Fort Myers for a CCSA dual meet on January 14 before the Blue and Green travel to FIU (Jan. 22) to take on the Golden Panthers at the Biscayne Bay Campus. FGCU closes out its regular season with a home meet against FAU on January 28.
The Eagles then defend their back-to-back titles at the CCSA Conference Championship on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., from February 17-19. FGCU finished 194.5 points ahead of second place Davidson last season.
