BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team continued their solid start to the 2010-11 season, dominating in-state rival FAU 170-114 at the at the FAU Aquatic Center on Saturday morning.

“The girls had a real quality day today,” said head coach Neal Studd. “We swam well from top to bottom and had a really solid team performance. I am very proud of how this team is shaping up.”

FGCU’s “B” team captured first place in the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:50.99, less than one second ahead of the Blue and Green’s “A” team (1:51.10).

The Eagles dominated the freestyle events, winning four out of the five races, including a sweep of the top three positions in the 500 free. Jesse Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) won the 500 free with a time of 5:05.79, followed by Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park) and Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla./Lecanto), who finished 5:06.09 and 5:10.19, respectively. Daniel also picked up a win in the 200 free (1:53.91) and a second place finish in the 100 free (53.92) behind teammate Vicky Cadge’s (Long Melford, Suffolk, United Kingdom/Kelly College) 52.41. Christina Tannien (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) won the 50 free in 24.85.

FGCU also captured victories in the backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events. Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden/Polhemskolah) grabbed a pair of wins in the 100 (59.84) and 200 back (2:06.62). The Eagles swept the 100 breast with Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec/Université Laval), Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista Community) and Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School) claiming the top three spots. Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly, finishing with times of 57.29 and 2:05.25, respectively.

In the diving competitions, Gaby Shaw (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista) finished second in the 1-meter with a score of 247.50, while Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) earned a second-place finish in the 3-meter competition with a 221.10.

The Eagles will be back in action on Oct. 22 as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Florida A&M, Campbell, Miami and Florida State.
