Women's Swimming Downs FAMU, 83-55

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming team defeated Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foe Florida A&M, 83-55, at Florida State’s Morcom Aquatic Center on Friday night.

"We had some great performances today,” said head coach Neal Studd. “Some of our girls got to swim different events and fared very well."

Freshman Emily Escorcia (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) finished in first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.96 to open the meet. Sophomore Mandy Melymuka (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul Catholic) followed shortly behind with a second-place finish, clocking in at 10:45.55. The pair also swam the 500 free with Escorcia swimming a 5:18.97 and Melymuka finshing at 5:25.01.

Sophomore Erin Black (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) and freshman Nicolette Hansen (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) placed one-two in the 200 free with times of 1:57.52 and 1:57.96, respectively. Sophomore Dani Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School), junior Teri Lytle (Melbourne, Fla./Melbourne Catholic) and senior Isabela Mills Pinto (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Universidad Amembi Morumbi) took the top three places in the 50 free. Beaubrun clocked in at 24.83, while Lytle touched in at 25.27 and Mills Pinto followed behind at 25.44.

In the 200 IM, freshman McKenzie Cassidy (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Bishop Verot) and sophomore Caitlin Pine (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) picked up points for first and second place finishes, respectively. Cassidy swam a 2:15.61 and Pine finished at 2:18.00. Cassidy and Pine also swam the 100 breast along with Kelli Novak (Castalian Springs, Tenn./Marshall). Novak paced the trio with a time of 1:09.28 with Pine (1:10.98) and Cassidy (1:12.48) finishing shortly behind.

The Eagles took first and second in the 100 fly as well from freshman Katie Westbrook (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) (1:01.18) and sophomore Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School) (1:02.01).

Sophomores Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge) (54.57) and Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) (56.25) swam in the 100 free while freshman Cheryl Corvo (Shailimar, Fla./Choctawatchee) and sophomore Brittany Bellomo (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) swam in the 100 back with times of 1:01.47 and 1:03.85, respectively.

The Eagles stay in Tallahassee to face off in a double dual meet against Florida State and Miami on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Morcom Aquatics Center. The teams met earlier this year at the All-Florida Invite where Florida State and Miami finished in second and third, respectively in front of FGCU.
