FGCU Cruises Past FIU, 178-75

MIAMI, Fla. – The FGCU swimming and diving team took the top spot in all 12 events scored and swam top times in two of the exhibition events to beat in-state rival FIU, 178-75, on Saturday afternoon in its final away meet of the year.

Opening up the meet with a sweep, senior captain Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla./Lecanto) took first in the 1000-yard free with a time of 10:35.25, while sophomore Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge) took second and freshman McKenzie Cassidy (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Bishop Verot) placed third. Poter posted a time of 10:38.47 and Cassidy came in shortly behind at 10:44.49.

Freshman Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.12 and classmate Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista) (1:57:03) finished third. Meeder picked up a win in the 500 free with a time of 5:12.15, while Potter (5:13.15) took second and Cooke (5:14.76) placed third.

FGCU swept the 100 back as senior Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden/Polhemskolah), and freshmen Cheryl Corvo (Shalimar, Fla./Choctawatchee) and Nicolette Hansen (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) grabbed the top three spots Hyddmark touched the wall first at 59.19, Corvo finished at 1:00.42 and Hansen clocked a 1:01.31. In the 200 back, Hyddmark (2:06.28) took first, but Corvo (2:08.08) and Hansen (2:12.30) flopped spots.

The Eagles continued their winning ways, taking the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke as well. Sophomore Dani Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School) placed first with a time of 1:05.43. Meeder (1:08.51) and Brittney Evans (Hollywood, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) (1:09.13) finished second and third, respectively.

Juniors Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./St. Bonaventure) and Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) went one-two, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Butler clocked a 2:06.59 and Cianci was just behind with a time of 2:06.77.

Junior Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, U.K./Kelly College) took first in the 50 free with a time of 24.70, finishing just ahead of freshman Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) (25.00). Cadge (23,96) also placed first, Evans placed second with a time of 54.32 and Leah Daniel (Winnepeg, Manitoba/Grant Park) (55.26) took third in the 100 free.

Junior Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec/Université Laval) and sophomores Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School) and Mandy Melymuka (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul Catholic) took the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke. Plante touched the wall at 2:24.79, while Rodriguez (2:26.10) and Melymuka (2:31.10) finished in second and third, respectively.

In relay action, the quartet of Cadge, Beaubrun, Butler and Tanninen posted a time of 1:47.94 for a first-place finish. Hyddmark, Rodriguez, Cianci and Evans finished in third with a time of 1:51.42. FGCU also placed first and third in the 200 free relay. Beaubrun, Tanninen, Plante and Daniel finished with at time of 1:38.60 while the team of Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep), Isabela Mills Pinto (Petropolis, Brazil/Universidade Amembi Morumbi), Meeder and Porter swam a 1:41.94.

Despite going exhibition in both diving events, senior Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) scored an FGCU team record and season-high of 288.53 in the 3-meter competition, while freshman Alex Valder (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) scored a season-high 233.93. McNamara also posted a season-high 271.43 in the 1-meter, while Valder scored a 224.25. McNamara had the previous team record of 281.18.

FGCU hosts its final meet before the conference championship on Friday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. against FAU at the FGCU Aquatics Center. The meet will be the final home event for the team’s six seniors.
