Swimming & Diving is in Third at All-Florida Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming & diving team currently sits in third place with 200 points after day one at the All-Florida Invitational in Gainesville.

“We had a great day today, some very fast swims for this early in the season,” said head coach Neal Studd. “We are having fun as a team and it is a great group to be around. “We had awesome swims from Porter, Cadge, Svensson and Tanninen. “We need to stay tough as three days is a long meet but this is a great start.”

Host Florida stands in first place with 317 points followed by Florida State (273). Miami is in fourth with 183 followed by FAU in Fifth at 91.

FGCU started off strong in the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) finished first in the “B” final with a time of 4:59.81. Teammate junior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams/Florida) followed right behind in third-place at 5:00.63.

In the 200 IM, senior Victoria Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, United Kingdom/Kelly College) earned a fifth-place finish in the “A” final with a time of 2:04.87. In the “B” final, Lehtonen came in second at 2:08.53.

Freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) picked up a third-place finish in the 50-yard free with a time of 23.39 to set a new FGCU record in the event. Senior Leah Daniel (Winnepeg, Manitoba/Grant Park HS) swam a fourth-place finish in the “B” final with a time of 24.72.

The 200 free relay, swam by Tanninen, Svensson, Cadge and Daniel, finished in third-place with a time of 1:35.07. The 400 medley team of Svensson, Cadge, Dani Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School), and Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) placed sixth with a time of 3:49.90.

In diving action, sophomore Kamryn McNamara (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) finished in 12th-place with 207.95 points. In her collegiate debut, freshman Brittany Mathers (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS) followed in 13th-place with 205.60.

FGCU continues competition in day two of the All-Florida Invite on Saturday morning at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
