Swimming & Diving Still in Third at All-Florida Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming & diving team is still in third place with 425 points after day two at the All-Florida Invitational in Gainesville.

“The 200 medley relay team was awesome and we gave Florida all they could handle,” said head coach Neal Studd. “It was another good day and we extended our lead on Miami. “The team is doing well learning how to handle a three day format. “This is a great run through for the Georgia Tech Invite and our conference championship.

Host Florida stands in first place with 748 points followed by Florida State (643). Miami is in fourth with 358 followed by FAU in Fifth at 232.

The Eagles got off to a fast start in the 200-yard medley relay, freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan), junior Dani Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School), junior Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and sophomore Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson HS) swam to a second-place finish with a time of 1:43.37. The medley relay team was just behind the 2010 national champion Florida Gators.

Junior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams/Florida) picked up a third-place finish in the “B” final of the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.02.

In the 100-yard fly, senior Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee HS/St. Bonaventure) finished first in the “B” final touching in at 57.32, while her teammate senior Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) came in third at 57.83.

Sophomore Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) earned a first-place finish in the “B” final of the 200-yard free with a time of 1:53.03, while teammate Jamie Akenberger (Bowling Green, Ohio/BGSU) came in second at 1:53.09.

In the 100-yard breast, Beaubrun swam to second-place finish in the “A” final with a time of 1:03.87. Senior Victoria Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, United Kingdom/Kelly College) also earned points coming in 6th place touching in at 1:06.38.

In the final event of the day, the 800-yard free relay swam by Atkenberger, Porter, Cadge and Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park HS), finished in fifth-place with a time of 7:38.91.

In the 3-meter diving competition, sophomore Kamryn McNamara (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) finished in 11th-place with 209.80 points. Sophomore Alex Valder (Tampa, Fla./Sickles HS) followed in 13th-place with 204.85.

The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
