Swimming and Diving Heads to Boston for Dual Meet

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming & diving team continues its 2011-12 season against Boston College and Maine, on Friday starting at 5 p.m. at the Flynn Recreation Complex Pool in Boston, Mass.

FGCU is 3-1 in dual meets this season with wins over FIU (66-44), Miami (151-148) and last week’s victory over FAU 179-119.

Last week, FGCU picked up seven first-place finishes, beginning with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.31. The team of freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan), juniors Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School), Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep), and sophomore Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) took home the win by nearly two seconds over FAU.

Svensson picked up victories in the 100-back and the 100-free, while classmate Karen Vilorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Elvel School) placed fourth in the 100-back.

Tanninen finished first in the 50-yard free, while placing second in the 100-free last weekend.

Beaubrun swam to a first-place finish with a time of 1:05.51 in the 100-yard breast, while sophomore Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista HS) came in at 1:08.13 for fifth place in the event.

Seniors Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee HS/St. Bonaventure) finished second and third in the 200-Fly. Cianci finished with a time of 2:07.28, while Butler touched in at 2:07.79.

The Green and Blue kept rolling in the 100-yard Fly sweeping the event with Butler, Cianci and freshman Kathryn Brewer (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside HS) finishing in the top three spots.

FGCU went on to win the final event of the day, as Tanninen, senior Leah Daniel (Winninpeg, Manitoba/Grant Park), Beaubrun and Svensson placed first in the 200-free relay touching in at 1:36.11.

Boston College is hosting its first dual meet of the season, while Maine is 1-0 after defeating Rhode Island, 155-145, last weekend.
