Svensson Earns Third CCSA Swimmer of the Week Award

FORT MYERS, Fla. –After a career weekend in the three-day Georgia Tech Invitational last weekend, FGCU swimming freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) has been selected, for the third time this season, as the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Women’s Swimmer of the Week, ending on November 21. This marks the fourth time FGCU has won a weekly CCSA accolade.

Svensson finished with three individual NCAA qualifying times in the 50 free (22.54), 100 free (49.49) and 100 back (53.88), while also a part of two relay teams that posted NCAA B Cuts in the 400 free relay (3:24.48) and the 200 medley relay (1:40.77).

In the 200 medley relay, Svensson’s backstroke leg of 25.19 helped the Eagles finish first against Florida and five ACC schools (Miami, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Clemson), her lead-off split was fastest among all teams in the meet.

In the 400 medley relay, she swam the first leg again with a 100 back time of 54.34, setting a then-new conference record, helping the Eagles finish second with a time of 3:44.67. A day later, she broke her own record in the 100 back finals with a faster 100 back time of 53.88, setting the new conference mark.

In the 200 free relay, the Uppsala, Sweden native led off with her fastest 50 free time of the season at 22.54, breaking a FGCU, conference and Swedish national record, helping the Eagles finish third in the relay with a time of 1:32.84. In the 400 free relay, she swam the first leg, helping the Eagles place fourth with a NCAA “B” cut of 3:24.48. She placed second in the 50 free and 100 free “A” finals with a time of 22.55 and 49.49, respectively.

Also she placed eighth in the 100 fly finishing with her fastest time of the season at 55.64.

The Green and Blue are back in the pool for their first home meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 7, as they welcome Georgia Tech, North Dakota and CCSA foe Liberty.
