Swimming and Diving Set for Road CCSA Meets this Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team heads out on the road against Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foe UNF and Georgia Southern this weekend. The Eagles are set to take on the Ospreys on Friday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at the UNF Aquatic Center, followed by a dual meet against Georgia Southern on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 12 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.

The Eagles have an 8-2 dual meet record with victories over FIU (66-44), Miami (151-148), FAU (179-119), Boston College (188-103), Maine (168-123), Liberty (179-57), North Dakota (168-75) and Radford (145-116).

FGCU is ranked No. 9 in the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Swimming Poll and is the only team in the CCSA ranked in the top 25. The 2011 CCSA runner-up Davidson and Liberty were the only other teams in the conference to receive consideration.

Freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) has earned three individual NCAA qualifying times in the 50 free (22.54), 100 free (49.49) and 100 back (53.88), while also a part of two relay teams that posted NCAA B Cuts in the 400 free relay (3:24.48) and the 200 medley relay (1:40.77). Junior Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School) also earned an NCAA B cut in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.49.

Svensson picked up her fourth CCSA Swimmer of the Week award last week after two individual victories in the 50 free (23.17) and the 100 back (56.79), finishing first against Georgia Tech, Liberty and North Dakota. In the 200-yard medley relay, she swam the first leg in 25.77, helping the Eagles place first over Georgia Tech with a time of 1:45.37.

In the previous meet against Radford, the Uppsala, Sweden product earned first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:57.17) and the 100 breast (1:06.60) to help FGCU secure its 19th-straight win in conference meets. In the 200 free relay, she swam the anchor leg in 22.86, fastest among all competitors, helping the relay team finish second.

Junior Maegan Butler (Orangburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee HS/FAU), competing in her first meet with the Eagles, earned her first CCSA Diver of the week award after placing first in the 3-meter dive against Radford with an NCAA Diving Zone B qualifying score of 270.90. The Orangeburg, N.Y. native earned two sixth-place finishes overall in the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive against Georgia Tech, Liberty and North Dakota with scores of 213.80 and 213.75, respectively.

UNF enters the meet with a 4-3 dual meet record after defeating CCSA foes Campbell (168-119), Florida A&M (235-21), Radford (171-69) and College of Charleston (135-107). Georgia Southern has a 6-2 dual meet record with victories over SCAD (131-74), Darton (195-65), CCSA opponents Campbell (163-74), College of Charleston (162-138), Gardner-Webb (150-110) and UNF (125-118).
