Four National Records Broken as Vilorio Pushes for Olympic Berth
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Competing in the 2012 GCST Trials Qualifier Meet, FGCU women’s swimming freshman Karen Vilorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Elvel School) and incoming freshman Lani Cabrera (Miami, Fla./Davie Nadadores Swim Team) broke national records in four events (100-meter back, 200-meter back, 200-meter free, 400-meter free) last weekend.
Vilorio finished in second place with a new Honduras record in the 200-meter back touching in at 2:22.50, while placing seventh in the 100-meter back with a time of 1:06.18.
“I am delighted Karen continues to improve, she has worked hard all spring and improved in the pool, the weight room and also her nutrition thus, she deserves her reward,” said head coach Neal Studd. “It is great to see the drive she has to convince her national federation to select her for this summer's Olympic Games. If selected, I know she will do them proud in the true spirit of the Olympics. She has a couple of other opportunities coming up to improve her chances, especially in 10 days when she will represent Honduras in El Salvador. I think she will swim even faster then and everyone is so excited for Karen.”
Cabrera swims internationally for Barbados and set two new records in the 200-meter free by coming in fourth with a time of 2:06.74, and placing sixth in the 400-meter free at 4:23.31.
“It was great to see one of our talented incoming freshman set some records at the meet,” said Studd. “Lani showed true determination in her races and I will be working closely with her club coach to continue to guide her successfully next year and beyond. She is pushing hard for qualification to this summer's Olympic Games and when she is fully rested she has proved to herself this week that she can get the standard time necessary.”
Both swimmers are looking to join junior Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School), who already qualified for the Summer 2012 London Olympics, and will be competing in the 100-meter breast for St. Lucia.
