@FGCU_WSwim Celebrates 2012-13 Season
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s swimming and diving team celebrated another successful season with its annual end of year banquet last weekend.
The banquet was a celebration of the Green and Blue’s 9-2 (4-0 CCSA) season that saw them capture the program’s fifth-straight Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) title.
“It has been a stella year for us as we continue our success both in and out of the pool,” said four-time Coach of the Year Neal Studd. “The team votes for four of the five awards with the exception of the Coaches Award. They choose very well sophomore Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) was not only the Swimmer of the year at FGCU she was also swimmer of the year in the conference. But perhaps even more outstanding was she was awarded the Elite 89 award at this year’s NCAA's, the swimmer or diver that qualified for NCAA finals with the best GPA…hers a perfect 4.0! Likewise, senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) was also diver of the year in the conference as well as for FGCU. Junior Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Herforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) won the Hardest Worker award for an unprecedented third straight year. She continues to lead our team as a captain and by example. The Most Improved went to freshman Meghan McGuirk (Plaistow, N.H./Peddie School) who is an awesome young lady out of New Hampshire and the great Peddie School program in NJ. She has some illness this year but just had some incredible drops in times and her team recognized that.”
“The Coaches Award went to a freshman for the first time in program history, Ellen Vann (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS). For me Ellen came in everyday and worked hard, but it was her positive attitude and positive influence on her teammates which won her award. Just a pleasure to be around everyday.”
Svensson added to her many accolades this season as she was named the team’s Swimmer of the Year. The Upsala, Sweden product was just recently named the CCSA Swimmer of the Year as well as earned the women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet at the 2013 CCSA Championship. At the Championship, she won the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back events, and was a member of the winning 200-medley relay and the 400-medley. She qualified for the NCAA “B” cuts in the 50 free, 100 free and the 200-medley relay.
Svensson participated in the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship for the second consecutive season, and was the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the NCAA Championship. She holds the Conference record in the 100-back and was a member of the 200-medley relay and the 400-medley relay that holds the Conference record. Svensson earned three Swimmer of the Week honors this season.
Butler took home the team award for Diver of the Year. Butler was named the CCSA’s Diver of Year as well as garnering the CCSA’s Most Outstading Diver of the Meet for the second consecutive year. The Orangeburg, N.Y. standout won both the 1-meter and 3-meter board, and set a meet record in the 3-meter event at the 2013 CCSA Championships. The Orangeburg, N.Y product, also garnered four CCSA Diver of the Week awards. At the 2013 NCAA Diving Zone B, Butler placed 28th on the 1-meter board event and 35th on the 3-meter board event.
