FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) of the FGCU swimming and diving team, has qualified to represent Sweden at the World University Games, held in Kazan, Russia on July 6-17, with the swimming portion taking place from July 10-16.

The Upsala, Sweden native will compete for her home country in the 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle events.

“I am very happy to get to represent Sweden’s national team in Russia this summer,” said Svensson. “With 13,000 participants world university games will be a bigger event than Olympics so I am really excited about that. Right now I am staying in Fort Myers to train until end of June, and the meet starts July 6th.”

Svensson is coming off an amazing sophomore campaign which saw her earn the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimmer of the Year award as well as the women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet at the 2013 CCSA Championship.  At the Championship, she won the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back events, and was a member of the winning 200-medley relay and the 400-medley.  She qualified for the NCAA “B” cuts in the 50 free, 100 free and the 200-medley relay.

Svensson participated in the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship for the second consecutive season, and was the recipient of the Elite 89 award at the NCAA Championship.  She holds the Conference record in the 100-back and was a member of the 200-medley relay and the 400-medley relay that holds the Conference record.  Svensson earned three Swimmer of the Week honors this season.
