Swimming & Diving Opens With Win at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The FGCU Swimming and diving team completed their first regular season meet with a victory over FAU this weekend.  The Eagles also fell the Georgia Tech in the Tri-meet.  FGCU’s 200 yard medley relay, comprised of Viktoria Hyddmark, Cat Silveira, Margie Chamberlin, and Rachael Rein came storming off the blocks with a 2nd place finish (1:49.15) in the first event of the day.

Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman Rosy Murray and junior Margie Chamberlin. Rosy Murray set a freshman record with a first place finish in the 1000 Freestyle (10:24.80) while also setting both a freshman and school record with a first place finish in the 400 IM (4:26.68). Junior Margie Chamberlin broke two school records, one in the 100 Butterfly (56.96) and another in the 200 Butterfly (2:02.93).

Other outstanding performers for the Eagles including Viktoria Hyddmark, Courtney Gallo, and Cat Silveira. Hyddmark swam a 2:07.29 in the 200 Backstroke which beat all of FAU’s swimmings. Courtney Gallo and Cat Silveira also had solid performances on the day. Gallo, a senior and team captain, finished ahead of all other FAU swimmers in the 1000 Freestyle (10:37.97) while Silveira competed the 100 Breaststroke in 1:07.59.

In the last event of the day, the 400 yard Freestyle relay, FGCU beat all other competitors with a solid 3:33.92 swam by Margie Chamberlin (54.02), Margrete Ulvestad (53.40), Leah Daniel (54.20), and Rachael Rein (52.30).

Pacing the Eagle divers were Gaby Shaw with a 1 meter score of 229.45 and Karmin McNamara with a 3 meter score of 201.40.

The Eagles will be back in action on October 4, 2008 at the University f Miami to take on two other state universities…University of Miami and Florida State University.
