FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. this week for the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, where they will look to defend their title from a year ago. The championships, which will be held at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, begin on Thursday (Feb. 18) and continue through Saturday (Feb. 20).

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 12-3 dual meet record (6-0 in CCSA) and are ranked fifth in the latest CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Division I poll. Davidson is the only other CCSA school in the top 25; the Wildcats are currently ranked 16th.

FGCU completed their second consecutive undefeated CCSA season, finishing with a 6-0 record this year after recording a perfect 5-0 CCSA record last season. The only CCSA dual meet that the Eagles have ever lost was also the closest result in school history: a 150.5-149.5 loss at Georgia Southern on January 19, 2008. In three years of competition, the Blue and Green are a remarkable 14-1 in conference meets.

The Eagles have now won nine consecutive dual meets dating back to October 17, when they lost to Florida State on October 17. FGCU’s only losses this season have come at the hands of major Division I schools that are currently just outside the top 25 of the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Division I poll (Florida State – 31st, Alabama – 32nd, & Georgia Tech – 35th).

At last year’s CCSA Championships, the Blue and Green swam away with the title, earning 887 points, 234 more than second-place Davidson’s 653 points. The Eagles also took home every individual award, including Most Outstanding Swimmer (Vicky Cadge), Most Outstanding Diver (Karmin McNamara), Most Outstanding Freshman Performer (Vicky Cadge), Swimming Coach of the Year (Neal Studd), and Diving Coach of the Year (Patti Stringham).
