GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming & diving team currently sits in fourth place with 145 points after day one at the All-Florida Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
“We had a really good day. We had several good swims and the diving went well,” said head coach Neal Studd. “Tomorrow is going to be a tight battle, and we will have to swim our bests to beat Miami. Overall a really good day with good individual performances and a good learning experience.”
Host Florida stands in first place with 319 points followed by Florida State (279.5) and Miami (239.5), respectively. FAU is in fifth with 128 points followed by Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern (42).
Junior Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park) finished first in the “B” final of the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.48. Classmates Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, U.K./Kelly College) and Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec/Université Laval) earned points in the 200 IM. Cadge clocked in at 2:05.90 for a sixth-place finish, while Plante finished in first in the “B” final of the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.46.
Freshman Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) opened her collegiate career with an eighth-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.43. Cadge also swam the 50 free, touching in at 24.81 for a third place finish in the “B” final.
The 200 free relay, swam by Tanninen, Daniel, Cadge and junior Isabela Mills Pinto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Universidade Amembi Morumbi), finished in fifth place with a time of 1:37.08. The 400 medley team of Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden/Polhemskolah), Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School), Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge) had a seventh-place finish (4:00.77) to add 22 points to the Eagles total.
In diving action, the defending Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association 3-meter diving champion, senior Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) earned an 11th-place with 237.15 points. Classmate Gaby Shaw (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista) also earned points with a 13th-place finish from 210.35 points.
FGCU continues competition in day two of the All-Florida Invite on Saturday morning at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
