GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After three days of competition at the All-Florida Invitational, the FGCU women’s swimming & diving team finished in third place with 594 points at the Stephen C. O'Connell in Gainesville on Sunday evening.
“To be third in the state by so much was great for this team,” said head coach Neal Studd. “We achieved our goal for the weekend and now look to move the program forward as always. “We had a complete team effort and that always makes a coach happy when everyone is pulling in the same direction.”
Host school Florida racked up 1,074 points for a first-place finish followed by Florida State (911) in second place. FGCU finished in third at 594 points, ahead of Miami’s 467 points in fourth.
Senior Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park HS) earned a fourth-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, while taking part in the fifth-place 400 free relay team. Sophomore Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson), junior Jamie Akenberger (Bowling Green, Ohio/BGSU), Daniel and freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) touched in at 3:28.50.
Svensson and Tanninen had success in their individual swims as well. Svensson placed fifth in the 100-yard fee with a FGCU record time of 50.91, while Tanninen came in eighth at 52.47. Daniel swam to a third-place finish in the “B” final of the 100-yard free with a time of 53.29.
Behind Daniel in the 1650 free, sophomores Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) (17:31.65) and Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista HS) (17:38.80) took sixth and ninth, respectively.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Dani Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School) swam to a first-place finish in the “B” final with a time of 2:21.03. Teammate senior Victoria Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, United Kingdom/Kelly College) touched in right behind at 2:23.33.
In the 200-yard fly, senior Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee HS/St. Bonaventure) finished first in the “B” final with a time of 2:07.75, while her teammate senior Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) came in second at 2:08.34.
The Blue and Green are back in the pool on Saturday, October 29 as they head to Boca Raton to face FAU and Princeton in a double dual meet. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the FAU Aquatic Center.
