Swimming and Diving Hosts First Home Meet of 2012
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming & diving team hosts its first home meet of the season against Georgia Tech, North Dakota and Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foe Liberty, on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the FGCU Aquatics Center.
The Eagles have a 5-1 dual meet record with victories over FIU (66-44), Miami (151-148), FAU (179-119), Boston College (188-103) and Maine (168-123). The Green and Blue are pushing towards its fourth straight CCSA Championship. Freshman Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) has earned three individual NCAA qualifying times in the 50 free (22.54), 100 free (49.49) and 100 back (53.88), while also a part of two relay teams that posted NCAA B Cuts in the 400 free relay (3:24.48) and the 200 medley relay (1:40.77). Junior Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School) also earned an NCAA B cut in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.49.
FGCU is currently ranked No. 9 in the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Swimming Poll and is the only team in the CCSA ranked in the top 25. The 2011 CCSA runner-up Davidson and Liberty were the only other teams in the conference to receive consideration. The 200-medley relay team of Svensson, Beaubrun, Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson HS) swam an NCAA qualifying time of 1:40.77 at the Georgia Tech Invitational earlier in the season and are currently ranked 21st in the nation according to CollegeSwimming.com.
Liberty enters the meet with a perfect 3-0 dual meet record after defeating Marshall (147-141), CCSA foes Radford (172-116) and Campbell (151-111). Georgia Tech is 1-5 with a victory against Clemson (196-104) and losses against Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Western Kentucky and Penn State. North Dakota has a 5-3 dual meet record with wins against South Dakota (172-128), Northern Iowa (185-114), South Dakota State (151-148), Western Illinois (245-47), while defeating Howard (116-80) on Jan. 1 in Fort Myers.
The Saturday home meet is POSTER DAY, where all fans can pick up their poster for the upcoming season.
