FORT MYERS, Fla. – Redshirt freshman Lani Cabrera (Barbados/St. Ursula’s Secondary School) of the FGCU swimming and diving team set a new Barbados national record in the 800-yard freestyle at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
Cabrera placed 12th out of 21 competitors in the 800-yard freestyle with a time of 8:57.56. She broke her own record of 9:00.09, which she set earlier this year in March at the Southern Sectionals in Orlando, Fla.
Cabrera owns five national records for Barbados in the 200-yard free (2:06.43), 400-yard free (4:23.31), 1500-yard free (17:16.87) and 400-yard IM (5:14.52).
The FGCU swimming and diving team will be back in action January 5th when they host a tri-meet against CCSA conference opponents, Georgia Southern and Liberty. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
