FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming and diving team earned the No. 44 spot in the top 100 fall performances, conducted by CollegeSwimming.com on Tuesday. The rankings account for the relative ranking of each team's top 27 individual swims in a given meet.

“It is always nice to be ranked ahead of so many teams from BCS conferences,” said three-time CCSA Coach of the Year Neal Studd. “The girls have had a phenomenal semester so it’s very nice for them.”

The University of Georgia leads the way, followed by Southern California, California, Florida and Texas A&M.

FGCU sits in front of BCS schools such as Pittsburgh (45), Kentucky (48), South Carolina (50), Miami (52), Duke (64), Georgia Tech (68) and Michigan State (83).

The Eagles finished second at the Georgia Tech Invitational behind Florida State, who was ranked No. 22 in the poll. The Green and Blue defeated Miami, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Harvard at the three-day competition and set nine new program records, including five first-place finishes.

In all, 188 women's teams were ranked.  The SEC led the way with five of the top ten performances this fall.  The Pac 12 was second with three of the top seven teams.  The only non-SEC or Pac 12 teams to crack the top ten were Texas (9) and Virginia (10).

FGCU was the only team in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) ranked in the top 100.

The Eagles will open up CCSA action January 5, when they host a tri-meet against Georgia Southern and Liberty at the FGCU Aquatics Center. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
