FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming and diving team will open up Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) conference action this Saturday when it host a quad-meet with Georgia Southern and Liberty at the FGCU Aquatics Center at 11 a.m. The University of North Dakota, who competes in the Western Athletic Conference, will also take part in this weekend’s meet.
The Green and Blue last competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational in early December and took home a second-place finish defeating Miami, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Harvard, Hawaii and Clemson.
The Green and Blue are 2-2 this season with both wins coming against ACC opponents.
FGCU is ranked No. 10 in the second edition of the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Swimming Poll and is the only team in the CCSA ranked in the top 25. The Eagles were ranked No. 8 in the first edition of the poll.
Since joining the CCSA in 2007, the Eagles are 21-1 in conference action and are currently riding a 19-meet winning streak. The Green and Blue’s only loss came at the hands of Georgia Southern back on Jan. 19, 2008. FGCU will look to make it five consecutive undefeated CCSA season and capture its fifth-straight CCSA Championship.
All-time, the Eagles are 4-1 against Georgia Southern and 4-0 against Radford. FGCU has only competed against North Dakota once and defeated them, 168-75, last season at home.
At the three-day Georgia Tech Invite, the Eagles set nine new program records, highlighted by freshman Julie Leth-Espensen (Vanloese, Copenhagen, Denmark/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) three new program and conference records in the 200-yard IM (2:00.68), 400-yard IM (4:15.32) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.19). Leth-Espensen also met the NCAA Division I “B” cut for all three events and was named a CCSA Swimmer of the Week for her performance.
FGCU has earned three CCSA Swimmer of the Week and three Diver of the Week honors in just 11 weeks. Senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) has garnered Diver of the Week two times this season while sophomore Cayla Collins (Largo, Fla./Osceola) received the award in the first week of voting. Freshmen Jennifer Morgan (Edmonton, Alberta/Harry Ainlay), Leth-Espensen and senior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS/Florida) have all received Swimmer of the Week accolades.
Georgia Southern enters Friday with a dual-meet record of 3-0 with wins over College of Charleston, Savannah College of Art & Design and Davis & Elkins. Liberty comes in with a 5-1 record, with victories over Campbell, Boston College and Maine. North Dakota comes into action with a 3-2 dual-meet record and has defeated St. Cloud State twice and South Dakota.
