FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) of the FGCU swimming and diving team, has been named Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimmer and Diver of the Year, respectively, announced by the league office Tuesday.
Svensson earned the women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet at the 2013 CCSA Championship. At the Championship, she won the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back events, and was a member of the winning 200-medley relay and the 400-medley. She qualified for the NCAA “B” cuts in the 50 free, 100 free and the 200-medley relay.
Svensson participated in the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship for the second consecutive season, and was the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the NCAA Championship. She holds the Conference record in the 100-back and was a member of the 200-medley relay and the 400-medley relay that holds the Conference record. Svensson earned three Swimmer of the Week honors this season.
Butler had a memorable senior campaign for the Eagles, earning the CCSA’s Most Outstading Diver of the Meet for the second consecutive year. Butler won both the 1-meter and 3-meter board, and set a meet record in the 3-meter event at the 2013 CCSA Championships. The Orangeburg, N.Y product, also garnered four CCSA Diver of the Week awards. At the 2013 NCAA Diving Zone B, Butler placed 28th on the 1-meter board event and 35th on the 3-meter board event. Both student-athletes were also named to the 2013 CCSA All-Academic team.
As a team, the Eagles are coming off their fifth-straight CCSA Championship after capturing 13 of a possible 20 first place finishes and recording five new program and CCSA records. FGCU finished first with 712 points, followed by Liberty (609), Georgia Southern (482.5), College of Charleston (353.5) and Gardner-Webb (349) to round out the top five teams
