CHARLOTTE – FGCU swimming & diving junior Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) picked up the team’s third conference honor of the 2013-14 season as she was named Costal Collegiate Swimming Associating Swimmer of the Week for the ninth time in her career.
Announced by the league office on Wednesday, the honor comes as a result of Svensson’s performance against FIU in last Saturday’s dual meet, where she paced the Eagles with three individual first-place finishes and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay to earn another.
The Uppsala, Sweden native started the day by taking first in the 100-yard backstroke (56.65) before continuing on to shine in the short-course freestyle events, touching first in the 50-yard (23.44) and 100-yard races (51.15).
In the meet’s final event, Svensson combined with Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy), Evita Leter (Paramaribo, Suriname/St Brendan HS) and Lani Cabrera (Barbados/St. Ursala's Secondary School) to finish the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:29.86.
In just her third season, the junior has been a tremendous leader for the Green and Blue throughout her career. Holding four individual FGCU program records and one conference record, Svensson was named 2013 CCSA Swimmer of the Year and while competing in last year’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships she received the Elite 89 award.
As a sophomore Svensson garnered three CCSA weekly awards, after leading the conference her freshman year earning four.
Svensson and the Eagles will continue the 2013-14 season as they travel Boca Raton to face FAU in a dual meet on Feb. 1 at Noon. For complete coverage of FGCU women’s swimming and diving, follow us on Twitter @FGCU_WSWIM and visit www.FGCUAthletics.com.
