KNOXVILLE – With a record-setting performance in the 200-yard medley and a disqualification in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the FGCU swimming & diving team sits in eighth place after day one of the 2014 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Conference Championship at the Allan Jones Aquatics Center in Knoxville.

Picking up points in only one of the evening’s two events, The Eagles sit in eighth with 34 points. Leading the pack is Liberty with 74, while Georgia Southern (62), Incarnate Word (58), Campbell (54) and North Florida (50) round out the top five.

Starting the night in record-breaking fashion, the Green and Blue placed second in the 200-yard medley relay with a program-record 1:38.82. The team of Kira Toussaint (Amstelveen, Netherlands/Keizer Karel College), Evita Leter (Paramaribo, Suriname/St. Brendan HS), Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) were neck-and-neck with the crew from Liberty during the four legs of the race, but the flames just barely out touched the Eagles for the win in a CCSA-record 1:38.21. Both Liberty and FGCU posted times faster than the previous meet and conference record of 1:38.85, set by the Eagles in 2013 championship meet.

Continuing on to the 800-yard freestyle relay, Devon Robins (London, United Kingdom/The Grey Coat Hospital), Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista), Nina Schiffer (Dortmund, Germany/SG Dortmund) and Lani Cabrera (Barbados/St. Ursala's Secondary School) united for the Eagles. The group would have placed third, but were disqualified from a false start.   FGCU’s disqualification was one of nine in Wednesday night’s women’s races.

The Eagles will return tomorrow for day two with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. For live scoring, video streaming, ticket prices and other championship information, please visit www.TheCCSA.com.
