Volleyball Team Plays Tough vs. No. 5 Barry
Fort Myers, Fla. – In its second match against nationally ranked Barry University, the Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team nearly pulled off an improbable upset here at the Eagles nest in front of over 500 raving Eagles fans, but came up short in four close games (30-27, 27-30, 30-25, 30-26).
The Buccaneers captured the first game (30-27), but couldn’t hold back a strong offensive attack as the Eagles came back to take game two (27-30), but eventually falling later to the 5th ranked Bucs in game three and four (30-25, 30-26) to snap the Eagles 9 game winning streak and unbeaten record at home.
The Eagles close out the season with a 23-5 record as they wait to receive a bid to NCAA regionals. Barry University improved to 28-1.
Sophomore setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin) had 47 assists for FGCU. Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers/Bishop Verot) made 24 digs for the Eagles while Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee/Royal Palm) added 12 kills and 12 digs. Senior middle hitter Kristy Hartley (Naples / St. John Neumann) had 15 kills and six digs. Junior Lori Brooks (Naples) contributed with 15 kills for FGCU.
The Eagles utilized a strong defensive effort and ball-control offense in three of the four games. But Barry University held the Eagles to an (.167) attack percentage in game three. After the Bucs jumped out to an early six-point advantage in game four, the Eagles rallied behind two kills each from junior hitter Lori Brooks (Naples) and senior middle blocker Kristy Hartley (Naples) to pull within two points but couldn’t pull out a victory as they were defeated 30-26.
