FGCU Volleyball Splits in Final Day of Armstrong Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team split a pair of matches in final day of the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirate Volleyball Classic on Saturday. FGCU beat Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras in five sets, 27-30, 30-24, 29-31, 30-15 and 15-13, in the morning, but fell to Wingate, 19-30, 30-25, 36-34, 20-30, 15-11, in the afternoon. In the first match, the Eagles rallied over Rio Piedras in five games (27-30, 30-25, 29-31, 30-15 and 15-13). Senior Devon Watts (Somerville, Texas) posted her six double-double of the season, knocking down 25 kills and collecting 19 digs to go with one block solo at a key game moment. Junior middle blocker Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) added 18 kills and 10 blocks. Junior setter Laura Manovill (Dunedin, Fla.) led the offense with a school-record 64 assists, to go along with 11 digs, one kill and four block assists. Sophomore Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) led five Eagles in double figures with 35 digs. Less than an hour later, the Eagles ran out of steam against Wingate. FGCU dominated in game one 30-19, but lost game two 30-25 and game three 36-34 to fall behind 2-1. The Eagles rallied to win game four 30-27 but couldn’t pull off their third straight five-game match of the tournament and fell 15-11 in the decisive game. Fonseca led the way with 19 kills and six blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) posted a double-double with 17 kills and 30 digs. Youngquist also collected three service aces. Starting setter Manovill collected 46 assists in three games. In game four, freshman setter Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, Fla.) entered the match and handed out 23 assists in the last two games. Hendry yet again led the Eagles in digs as their starting libero with 48, breaking her school record of 45 digs set earlier in tournament against Presbyterian. She also made one service ace as well as 39 serve receptions and has now posted 30 or more digs in four matches. The Eagles (9-2) host Palm Beach Atlantic (6-2) on Wednesday, September 14 in Alico Arena.
