FGCU Volleyball Ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II South Region
Thursday, October 06, 2005
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team is ranked second in the initial NCAA Division II South Region rankings released today. The NCAA will release four regional polls this fall prior to the NCAA championship tournament. The regional ranking is the highest ever for FGCU, which is in its second year of intercollegiate volleyball. Last year, FGCU was ranked as high as sixth by the NCAA regional committee. Tampa (16-2) currently holds down the top spot. Florida Southern (16-2) is third while defending national champion Barry (9-7) and Lynn (8-4) are fourth and fifth. In this week’s Division II national top-25, released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, Tampa is fourth, Florida Southern is 12th and Barry is 25th. FGCU remains unranked nationally, though the Eagles received 54 total points, 15 points behind Barry. “We are pleased that the committee has recognized our play to date but we have a long way to go,” said FGCU head coach Jaye Flood, who has the Eagles off to a 15-2 start. “It’s more important where we are at the end of the season, so we need to continue to improve every time we step on the court.” The Eagles have posted a 9-1 record against south region competition, including a 4-1 mark against the top 10 ranked teams in the region. FGCU still must play five matches against top-10 ranked regional opponents. The next regional rankings are scheduled to be released October 20. The NCAA will select eight teams from each of the eight geographic regions to participate in the regional championships, to be held November 18-21 on campus sites to be determined. In the South Region, champions of the Peach Belt, Sunshine State and South Atlantic conferences receive automatic bids. Five at-large teams are chosen to fill the eight-team field. FGCU is competing for one of the five at-large bids. The Eagles return to the court on Friday at 7 p.m. against NAIA member Flagler College in Alico Arena, where they have posted a 12-1 all-time home record.
