Eagles Volleyball Defeat Tritons

Fort Myers, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s volleyball team defeated NCAA Division II South Region foe Eckerd College in three games (30-15, 30-25 and 30-14). The Eagles are currently ranked second in the region and the Tritons are seventh. Five hitters for the Eagles (22-2) were in double digits, led by junior Erika Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with 12 kills and a .550 hitting percentage. Fonseca, ranked among the top-20 nationally in hitting percentage, also collected two block solos, a service ace and three digs. Senior Devon Watts (Somerville, TX) collected 11 kills with a .474 hitting percentage, two digs and three blocks. Three hitters collected 10 kills each, including sophomores Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, FL) and Heather Van Olst (Loxahatchee, FL) and junior Melissa Duffield (Cedar Rapids, IA). Youngquist posted 19 digs for her 13th double-double of the season and Duffield collected four blocks leading the team. Leading the Eagles at the net were both freshman Ciara Sandoval (Fort Myers, FL) and junior Laura Manovill (Dunedin, FL), who are running a 6-2 offense as setters. Sandoval collected 22 assists and nine digs. Manovill posted 27 assists with four digs. Sophomore libero Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, FL), who stands at third in the nation in digs per game at 6.66, collected 12 digs for the Eagles and two service aces. The Eagles, who have won 13 consecutive matches, host last year's national champions Barry University this Friday October 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Alico Arena. FGCU defeated Barry 3-1 earlier this year in Miami Shores, FL.
