Volleyball Travels to Savannah, Ga., for Four Matches
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 19th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team looks to extend a season-long three match winning streak this weekend at the AASU/Chatham Orthopedic Classic in Savannah, Ga.
FGCU begins the tournament with a 9:00 am match on Friday morning against Lenoir-Rhyne, who comes into the tournament with an 8-3 record. The Eagles will play their second match of the tournament versus Eckerd (5-2) at 3:00 pm. On Saturday, the Eagles take on Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at noon. The Eagles conclude the tournament at 5:00 pm on Saturday with Wingate, who comes in on a seven-match winning streak and overall record of 7-1.
In the young 2006 season, the Eagles are off to a 5-2 start and currently are on a three match winning streak. The Eagles have faced all four of this weekend’s opponents in the past, posting a 7-1 mark against the four foes. The Eagles are 1-0 against Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-0 against Eckerd, 1-0 against Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and 1-1 against Wingate.
All-American candidate Ericka Fonseca (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is off to a fast start for the Eagles, reaching double figures in kills in each of the first seven matches. She is also hitting a team-high .384 averaging 4.19 kills per game. She also leads the team in blocking, averaging 1.12 blocks per game.
Cara Ziegler (Fort Myers, Fla.) has made an impact early in her career as an Eagle. The transfer from Wright State is 26th in the latest NCAA statistics in hitting percentage at .385. Ziegler is averaging 2.42 kills and 1.04 blocks per game.
The AASU/Chatham Orthopedic Classic will feature 32 matches over a two day span and features several of the top teams in the country. Three of the 16 teams competing this weekend come in with a national ranking. All 16 teams are members of the NCAA Division II South Region. Nine of the competitors finished the 2005 season in the South Region top 10 poll.
The Eagles will wrap up a five match road swing on Tuesday September 12, at Nova Southeastern at 7:00 pm.
