Volleyball Cruises to 10th Straight Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 16th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won their 10th straight match with a 3-0 (30-10, 30-15, 30-15) sweep of Florida Tech to improve to 12-2. It was the ninth straight 3-0 win for the Eagles. FGCU jumped out to a 7-1 lead with kills from three different players and a pair of blocks by Chandra Ginest and Ericka Fonseca. The Eagles never looked back in game one and continued to build on their lead. Brooke Youngquist and Thais Alessandra de Franca each recorded four kills in game one as FGCU prevailed 30-10. Game two had a similar feel as FGCU scored the first four points of the game and never trailed. Mid-way through game two with the score at 17-14, FGCU went on an impressive 13-1 run to close out the game. Ericka Fonseca recorded five kills in the 30-15 game two win for the Eagles. In the third game, FGCU jumped out to an 8-2 lead before a 7-0 Florida Tech run gave the Panthers a brief 9-8 lead. From there, FGCU outscored the guest 22-6 to close the match. The Eagles used a 6-0 run behind the serving of Brooke Youngquist and a 7-0 run at the hand of Heather Van Olst to take the final game 30-15. Melissa Reinders led the Panthers with 19 digs in the match while Megan Konopnicki and Lindsay Foster each recorded five kills. Brooke Youngquist had 15 kills while hitting .400 and picking up 16 digs. Ericka Fonseca recorded 14 kills and added four blocks in the match. Thais Alessandra de Franca, making her second consecutive start, recorded a career-high nine kills in the match. FGCU will be in action again next Tuesday when they host Rollins at 7:00 pm in Alico Arena.
