Eagles Score Huge Win at Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – The 13th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University scored a big road win over #3rd ranked Florida Southern in four games. FGCU improved to 17-2 while FSC fell to 19-3 with the loss. The Mocs are the highest ranked team the Eagles have ever defeated. The Mocs jumped out to a 12-7 lead in game one, but a furious 7-0 FGCU run gave the Eagles a 14-12 lead they would never relinquish. The Eagles built a lead of as many as six. The Mocs would trim the lead to one on several occasions, but Erica Fonseca ended game one with a kill to give the Eagles a 30-27 game one win. After falling behind 3-1 in game two, FGCU went on a 9-4 run to take a 10-7 lead. The game was a see-saw affair that featured 15 ties while no team had a lead greater than three. The Eagles outscored the Mocs 6-1 to take the second game 30-27. Florida Southern went on a 5-0 run midway through the second game to take a 16-12 lead. The Mocs would continue to build on the lead and hand the Eagles their largest defeat in a game this season with a 30-2- decision. FGCU responded in game four with a 6-1 run to give themselves a 16-10 lead they would continue to build on. The Eagles led by as many as nine points in the decisive game. FGCU pounded home 20 kills while hitting .429 in game four. FSC saw five players reach double figures in kills, led by Ashley Martin’s 21. The Mocs recorded 77 kills in the match, six more than FGCU. Brooke Youngquist’s career-high kills led four Eagles in double figures in kills. Youngquist added 25 digs in the match. Heather Van Olst, Ericka Fonseca and Patricia Gomes da Silva each reached double figures as well. Whitney Hendry recorded 26 digs in the match for FGCU. FGCU continues their road swing with a match on Tuesday at Barry.
