Thursday, August 23, 2007

Fort Myers, Fla. – The FGCU Volleyball team opens the 2007 season tomorrow (August 24, 2007) against TCU in Tallahassee as part of the Florida State Invitational.

The trip to Tallahassee marks the start of a new era at FGCU. It will be the first competition as a Division I member for FGCU. The volleyball team was tremendously successful at the Division II level, making three NCAA Tournament appearances in as many years. The fourth year program has an overall record of 80-13 and now will try to translate that success to Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The Eagles return four starters plus their libero to the 2007 team. FGCU is coming off of a 29-3 campaign where they reached the South Region final of the NCAA tournament (D-II) for the second straight season. FGCU, now a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference and NCAA Division I, was selected fourth in the A-Sun preseason coaches poll. Seniors Brooke Youngquist (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Whitney Hendry (Fort Myers, Fla.) headline the returners. Youngquist is the career leader in kills while Hendry holds the school mark for digs. They are the only two remaining members of the inaugural volleyball team at FGCU. The Eagles also return starters Chandra Lefever (Fort Morgan, Col.), Cara Ziegler (Naples, Fla.) and Patrica Silva (Sao Palo, Brazil).

The Eagles open the Invitational with TCU. The Horned Frogs, coming off of a 17-15 season, return four starters as well. TCU returns five additional letterwinners from last year’s squad. FGCU and TCU will square off at 7:00 pm on Friday. The Eagles return to action Saturday at 2:00 against UNC-Asheville. The Bulldogs were selected to finish third in the Big South Conference and had a pair of players selected to the All-Conference team also. UNC-Asheville is coming off of a 15-18 season.
