Volleyball Hosts FGCU Supervolley Tournament

Fort Myers, Fla. – The FGCU Volleyball team will hold its first home match as a member of Division I tomorrow in the FGCU Supervolley Tournament. The Eagles will take on North Carolina Central at 7 p.m. at Alico Arena. On Saturday FGCU concludes the tournament with a match against Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m.

Last weekend the Eagles won the Northern Colorado Hampton Inn & Suites Classic in Greeley, Colorado. They finished the tournament 3-0 and were crowned champions thanks to a greater point differential than Iowa, who went 4-0. FGCU defeated St. Francis, UC-Riverside, and Northern Colorado during the 2-day tournament. Roberta Santos was named tournament MVP with 57 assists, 24 kills, 13 digs, 10 blocks, 7 aces, and a .320 hitting percentage. Brooke Youngquist (40 kills, .423 hitting percentage, 29 digs), and Ana Kokanovic (35 kills, .338 hitting percentage) were also named to the all-tournament team.

FGCU opens the Supervolley Tournament with North Carolina Central University, located in Durham, North Carolina. The Eagles are currently in their first season as a member of NCAA Division I. Last season, as a member of Division II they finished with a 32-13 record and a perfect 14-0 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. They fell in the Atlantic Region quarterfinal to #1 seed and host Lock Haven. Outside hitter Shari Matthews returns for her senior season after being named the 2006 NCAA Division II Daktronics Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year. NCCU comes into this weekend with a 5-4 record after going 2-2 in the Charleston Southern Invitatonal last weekend. They defeated Campbell and host Charleston Southern on Friday before falling to Tulsa and Stetson on Saturday. They are led once again this season by Shari Matthews, who is currently in the top 3 in every major statistical category for her team.

Saturday’s opponent, Bethune-Cookman University, is located in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Wildcats finished last season at 9-12 with a 5-5 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Bethune-Cookman returns 7 letterwinners and 3 starters. They are picked to finish 7th in the 11-team MEAC conference this season. They open their season on Friday with the opening match of the tournament against North Carolina Central at 3 p.m.

The Eagles are back on the road next weekend when they travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia for the James Madison University/Days Inn Invitational. FGCU opens the tournament on Friday at 10 a.m. against Elon University.
