Volleyball Wins Second Straight Match
FORT MYERS, Fla., - FGCU won their second straight match with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-16) sweep of A-Sun rival Campbell. The Eagles improve to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the league while Campbell falls to 2-8 and 1-1.
“Our communication was much better today,” said Head Coach Dave Nichols. “We blocked much better today also. We were pretty focused and only had one bad stretch during the match.”
The Eagles broke open a close game that was tied at 14 all with a 4-0 run that included kills by Roberta Santos, Catilin Shawver and Audrey Campbell. A sideout and then three points by the Eagles put FGCU up 21-15 and in control. FGCU ended game one with an ace by Santos for a 25-17 win.
In the second game, the Eagles used a 10-0 run behind the serving of Shawver to take a 21-9 lead. Shawver rattled off three straight aces during the run. FGCU easily won game two 25-12 and hit a blistering .480 in the game while limiting the Camels to six kills and (-.030) in the game.
The Eagles put away any hopes the Camels had of sending the match to a fourth game with an 8-3 outburst early in game three. FGCU allowed the Camels consecutive points only five times in the game and easily won 25-16.
Cambpell’s Caitlin Bendy led CU with six kills and a .312 percentage on the match. FGCU limited the Camels to just 21 kills and a .028 percentage on the match.
Ana Kokanovich pounded out 18 kills and hit .500 in the match. FGCU recorded a season-high 12 blocks in the match and hit .363 as a team. Roberta Santos added six kills to go with her 31 assists while Catilin Shawvr served up five aces in the match. The Eagles recorded double figures in aces for the second match in a row.
The Eagles will be back in action again next Friday night when they travel to Macon, Ga., to face Mercer at 7:00pm.
