Volleyball Falls 3-1 at Belmont
NASHVILLE, Tenn., FGCU dropped its first Atlantic Sun Conference match of the season, a 3-1 (25-19, 11-25, 25-20, 25-18) loss to Belmont. The Eagles 14-match winning streak against league foes was snapped as FGCU falls to 7-6 overall and 6-1 in the league. Belmont improves to 10-5 and 5-2 in the A-Sun.
FGCU held a 12-9 lead midway through the first set, but an 8-0 run behind the serving of Channing Salava gave the Bruins a 17-12 lead. The Bruins were content to side out for the remainder of the set and took a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win in game one.
The Eagles were dominant in the second set, hitting .429 with no errors in a 25-11 win in the set. The Eagles held Belmont to a .030 percentage and 10 kills. The Eagles broke open a close early game with a 13-3 run. Roberta Santos had a pair of aces and five different Eagles picked up kills in the set.
After the Eagles took a 9-5 early on in the third set behind three more aces from Santos, Cat Mundy helped rally the Bruins. The preseason player of the year picked up five kills in the set to lift the Bruins to a 25-20 win in the third set, putting them up 2-1.
The Eagles again got off to an early lead in the final set, a 7-4 advantage. A 4-0 Belmont run put the hosts up 8-7. Belmont went on to take a 15-10 lead. The Eagles went on a 4-1 run, prompting a Bruin timeout. Belmont outscored FGCU 9-4 to pull away for a 25-18 win in the final set of the day.
Mundy led all players with 14 kills and a .379 hitting percentage. Megan Clements added 12 digs and Channing Salava doled out 36 assists in the match.
Ana Kokanovic led the Eagles with eight kills and 13 digs. Roberta Santos added 24 assists, nine aces, seven digs and three blocks in the match. Catilin Shawver also added seven kills for FGCU.
The Eagles will be back in action again tomorrow at 5:00 pm when they face Lipscomb in the Atlantic Sun Match of the Week.
