Volleyball Sweeps Belmont

FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team extended their home-court winning streak to 32 matches with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-23) sweep of Belmont. The Eagles improve to 11-6 overall and 10-1 in the A-Sun while the Bruins fall to 14-7 and 8-4. The win sets up a key match with 1st place in the conference on the line when Lipscomb visits tomorrow.

“I thought that our intensity was great in the first two sets. I knew that they would rally back, Belmont is a very well coached and proud program,” said Head Coach Dave Nichols. “Early on, we blocked about as well as we have all season. Then a few breakdowns, but we played very well today.”

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead and managed to hold a slim lead early on. With the score 12-10 FGCU, a 10-1 run by the Eagles that featured a pair of aces kills by Ana Kokanovic gave the Eagles a huge 22-11 lead. The Eagles held on for a 25-17 win in the first set.

The Eagles again jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Already up 10-6, the Eagles went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 19-7 lead. The Eagles picked up three blocks during the run and two more aces from Kokanovic. FGCU coasted to a 25-14 win as they hit .588 in the set.

The Eagles again looked like they would coast as they took an early 4-0 lead. The Bruins would rally and take the lead for the first time at 12-11. The Bruins would up their advantage to 16-13 before FGCU scored three straight. After battling back and forth, a 3-0 run by the Eagles put FGCU up 22-19 and FGCU would hang on for a 25-23 win in the third set.

The Eagles held A-Sun preseason Player of the Year Cat Mundy in check, holding her to seven kills and seven digs . Kayla Albritton led Belmont with 11 kills in the match. FGCU limited Belmont to a .123 hitting percentage, the fourth straight opponent to hit less than .200 against FGCU.

Ana Kokanovic led all players with 12 kills in the match. Roberta Santos added seven kills while hitting .538, 25 assists and seven blocks. Audrey Campbell also picked up seven blocks for th Eagles. Catilin Shawver added eight kills while hitting .429.

The Eagles and Lady Bisons will square off in the A-Sun Match of the Week tomorrow at 1:00 pm in Alico Arena.
