Volleyball Hosts KSU and Mercer
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU volleyball team returns home to Alico Arena with a 1 ½ game lead in conference play as they host Kennesaw State and Mercer on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles bring in a 15-6 record overall and 13-1 mark in conference play.
The Eagles have been nothing short of dominant at home, winning 33 consecutive matches in Alico Arena. FGCU has only dropped four sets in two seasons against league foes in 14 matches in league play. Roberta Santos is coming off of a tremendous week in which she recorded two triple doubles and led FGCU to a 3-0 week on the road. Santos was named Atlantic Sun Player of the week for the third time in her career for her efforts.
The Eagles face Kennesaw State on Friday night, who comes in on a three-match winning streak in conference play. The Owls winning streak in conference play is their longest since joining the league. Sabritha Gulley leads the team in kills with 215 on the season. As a team, KSU is averaging 11.06 kills per set and hitting .134. They bring in a 5-18 record overall and 4-10 in the A-Sun, both are the best mark in program history.
Mercer has already solidified a spot in the league championship with a 10-4 mark in conference play. Since falling to FGCU on September 19, the Bears are on fire, going 10-1 since that time. Mercer has won five straight and faces Stetson on Friday night. The Bears are arguably the best defensive team in the A-Sun, holding opponents to a .153 percentage, tops in the league. The Bears also lead the A-Sun in blocks (2.26 per set) and digs (16.71).
On Friday night, anyone dressed in a costume will receive free admission and prizes will be awarded for the best costume as well. Also, free admission to the FGCU Men’s Soccer game with the purchase of a volleyball ticket and vice-versa. Students in attendance will get free cover into the FGCU student Halloween party later that night at La Bamba, while kids will receive a free trick-or-treat give away as well.
The FGCU vs. Mercer match has been selected as the Atlantic Sun Match of the Week. This is the fifth time this year that the Eagles have been selected as the feature match of the week. The Eagles are 3-1 in the previous matches with three straight wins.
Both matches can be seen live on ASun.TV. Friday’s match against Kennesaw State begins at 7:30 pm while Saturday’s match is set to start at 3:00 pm.
