Volleyball Opens Season at Miami Tournament
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team opens the 2009 season Friday, Aug. 28 against in-state foe Miami as part of the Miami Hurricane Invitational at the James L. Knight Sports Complex on the campus of UM in Coral Gables. The tournament field also includes Prairie View A&M and USF.
The opening match of the tournament will be Prairie View A&M against USF at 3 p.m. That match will be followed by FGCU versus Miami at 6 p.m.

The Eagles return eight letterwinners from the 2008 season, in which they finished the year 20-8 (18-2 A-Sun) and won their second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season Championship.
The lone team in the tournament field to face the Eagles prior to this weekend is the Bulls of USF. FGCU leads the series against the Bulls 1-0. The last meeting between the two schools was on Oct. 17, 2007 as the Eagles knocked off the Bulls 3-2 (30-28, 26-30, 30-25, 28-30, 15-13) in Tampa.
FGCU begins this season with two consecutive tournaments. After participating in the Hurricane Invitational, the Blue and Green will travel Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational hosted by the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Junior Jacqueline Cowden (Danville, Calif.) was the lone player to represent the Eagles on the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference Team, while as a team FGCU was predicted to win the Atlantic Sun Championship.
