Volleyball Sweeps UNF, 3-0
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team continued its dominance at home as they swept North Florida in A-Sun play by a score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, and 25-18)on Friday night. The Eagles fed off a spirited crowd of 446 at Alico Area en route to the victory.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 11-7 overall (10-2 A-Sun), while the Ospreys fall to 8-13 overall (3-9 A-Sun). The Eagles have now won five straight matches.
The opening set saw a lot of back and forth action, as there were 11 ties and four lead changes. But, the Eagles took charge as they went on an 11-3 run to build a 19-13 taking control of the set. The rally was capped by an Anna Wagner (Lincoln, Neb.) kill. The Ospreys would go on a run of their own and cut the deficit to just two points. But, the Eagles continued to play strong to win the set by a score of 25-22. Emma Racila (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the way for the Eagles by connecting on five of her nine attacks.
The Eagles fed off of their strong performance in the first set, to secure a dominant 25-18 second set victory. After trading points early in the set, the Eagles went on a 9-3 run to build a 15-9 cushion. Another big run by the Blue and Green built a comfortable 24-16 lead, as they cruised to an easy 25-18 win. For FGCU, Racila added four more kills, while Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia) and Wagner added three.
In the third set, the Eagles cruised to a 25-18 win sweeping UNF 3-0. Racila led the way for FGCU with 14 kills as Simic and Wagner added eight each. Early in the set the Eagles and Ospreys traded points, but the Blue and Green put things out of reach at the midway point. FGCU went on an 11-3 run while converting seven consecutive points to take control of the set at 18-12. UNF would pull as close as three points, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Eagles won the third set by a score of 25-18.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they host A-Sun Conference foe Jacksonville as part of the FGCU “Dig Pink” event to raise awareness and funds in support of the Side-Out Foundation for breast cancer. All fans are encouraged to wear pink.
