Volleyball Drops Final Non-Conference Match to FIU
MIAMI, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team completed the non-conference portion of the 2009 schedule on Wednesday night with a loss to Florida International. FGCU falls to 15-12 overall, while FIU improves to 27-2 with the 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-14, 25-21).Both squads came out ready to play and the score bounced back and forth until FIU took a19-13 lead. The Panthers notched their 20th point of the set on an Eagle violation and FGCU then recorded two of the next three points to put the score at 21-15.
An Eagle service error increased FIU's advantage to 22-15 before FIU picked up a pair of kills to put themselves in set-point position. A Panther service error made the score 24-16 before Yarimar Rosa closed out the set with a kill from the left side to give FIU a 25-16 set win and a 1-0 lead for the match.
The second set saw the Panthers run out to a 17-9 lead before FGCU notched two points to come within six at 17-11. The Panthers retaliated with a pair of kills to make the score 19-11 and forced the Eagles to call a timeout.
Out of the break, the teams traded service errors and with the score at 20-12, Rosa picked up another a kill as the Panthers took a 21-12 lead. FGCU then recorded a pair of points on a kill from Emma Racila (Fort Myers, Fla.) and an FIU hitting error before another FIU kill made the score 22-14. The Panthers would go on to score three unanswered points to take a 25-14 set win.
Up 2-0 for the match, FIU once again came out strong, taking a 17-12 advantage. The Eagles would not back down as they tallied two straight points off of kills by Ashley Yance (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia) to come within four at 18-14.
With FIU's advantage at 21-16, the Eagles once again fought back, with Simic registering a kill to make the score 21-17.
The teams then traded service errors and with the score at 22-18, Rosa slammed home a kill from the right side, to put the score at 23-18. The Eagles would not go away, notching three points in a row to come within two at 23-21. FIU then closed out the match off of a pair of kills to take a 25-21 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
FGCU will return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 12 when the Eagles host USC Upstate in the squad's A-Sun Conference regular season finale. First serve versus the Spartans is set for 7 p.m.
