Racila Named to the US Deaf National Team

FORT MYERS, Fla. - USA Deaf Volleyball has announced the selection of 13 women for the U.S. Deaf National Volleyball team for the 2010-2013 term. Florida Gulf Coast redshirt-senior outside hitter Emma Racila (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot/College of Charleston) has been named to the squad.

Racila earned A-Sun All-Academic honors, appeared in 31 matches, and recorded 2.51 kills/set in 2009. This season she has racked up 45 kills (1.88 per set) and eight total blocks, and will lead the Eagles as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to face Jacksonville (Oct. 1) and North Florida (Oct. 2) be begin A-Sun conference action this weekend.

The head coaches and two independent evaluators screened a total of 21 participants at the first volleyball tryout to be held since the conclusion of the 2009 Summer Deaflympics. The national team will train for the 2011 Pan American Deaf Games, 2012 World Championships, and 2013 Summer Deaflympics. Their first international exposure will be in a four-nation invitational tournament on July 23-31, 2011 at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.

USA Deaf Volleyball will continue to search for and recruit deaf and hard of hearing athletes for potential placement on the team. The final roster spots for the 2013 Summer Deaflympics will be announced in late 2012 or early 2013.

USA Deaf Volleyball is a committee under USA Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF) and is affiliated with USA Volleyball. USA Deaf Volleyball coordinates the national deaf volleyball teams for the Summer Deaflympics, World Championships, and Pan American Deaf Games.
